The fall of Somalia

Michelle Malkin, Wizbang and the Jawa Report all have details on the fall of Mogadishu to Islamofascists, who have begun to impose the sharia.

Aside from the obligatory statement on how if you want sharia law, you should just shoot yourself now because you are by definition too stupid to live, the fall of Mogadishu to a potentially Taliban-style government is something we need to pay attention to.

Somalia has not had a functioning government for some time, which sounds bad until you realize that San Francisco and New Orleans can say pretty much the same thing, at which point ... well, it's still bad. We should have leveled the place when they dragged our soldiers through the streets in 1993 when we tried to save them from starvation, but Clinton, like most Dems, was too big a weenie.

Anyway, having a Taliban-style government is far worse than no government. If Afghanistan was any indication, life under the sharia is about as close to hell as you can get. For its subjects and everyone else.

For Afghanistan became a world center of terrorism, with UBL as its de facto head. Somalia could be far worse, however, because while Afghanistan was an isolated, landlocked backwater, Somalia has a long coastline and sits along major shipping routes through the Red and Arabian seas. Somalia could very easily cut off transit through the Suez Canal by choking off the Red Sea at its southern end.

So, we need to pay attention to this. Maybe now is not a bad time to do the leveling we should have done in 1993.
